New horse Cornakill Rose at Kilbeggan, Smiling Eliza non runner at Listowel
One way or another the club has lost a number of horses recently so Gordon has been on the look out for a few new ones. Ballydunblaze was being leased to us but then the owner changed their mind and she won't be running for us now. Cornakill Rose is a 6 year old filly who was already trained by Gordon and her best run to date was a very close 2nd at Ballinrobe last year. She was in a 2m flat race that day and she was back in the same at Kilbeggan but this time in the GERC colours. Lisa O'Neill took the ride and had her about mid division on the first circuit. The first thing I noticed about Cornakill Rose was that she was a lot smaller than the others but if she's anything like our other girls - Smiling Eliza, Scealai Aonair and Clonard Abbey, she'll make up for that with guts.
In truth she seemed to be running flat out just to keep up with them and as soon as the leaders went she was left behind to finish where she started in mid division. Lisa was happy with her though given that it was her first run in a while. I think she will go over hurdles as well so I'll wait until I pass judgement on her. She was fine after and the next day.
Smiling Eliza was entered in another 3 Y O Hurdle this time at Listowel just a week after winning at Down Royal. She's been in great form and was tipped to win again by Sporting Life ahead of another Elliott horse. Unfortunately the increase in rain changed the going to Good to Yielding and Gordon decided not to run her on the softer ground. It would have been great to see her come up against Parisian again who beat her at Roscommon on her hurdling debut but she would have had the guts of 2 stone on him this time to try and turn the tables. Gordon's reluctance to run her on the softer ground begs the question - will we see her running for us again? If we don't, she owes us nothing as she has been the flag bearer for the club this summer. It also means we should see our mud fish Scealai Aonair out again soon.
