Smiling Eliza 2nd at Killarney

Smiling Eliza was back in 3 year old hurdle action on Friday in the Kingdom of Kerry at Killarney. Even the horses had to stop before racing to take in the stunning scenery surrounding the course as you can see from the picture taken by GE Racing Travelling Head - Camilla Sharples.

I was in Kerry for the bank holiday weekend this time last year when everyone was talking about Mayweather v McGregor. That fight ended up being very one sided and the battle between two of Gordon Elliott's stable - Elysian Plains and GERC star Smiling Eliza ended up with the former running away with it.

This wasn't the first time the pair had raced each other, Eliza beat her stable mate into 2nd at Roscommon when both made their hurdling debuts together and she was tipped to go one better by the Sporting Life. Gordon teamed her up with Denis O'Regan again for this one and he had her in about 2nd or 3rd early on. I didn't really notice the leader getting away from them but suddenly there was a 12 length gap. Most times you see a horse get well ahead they tend to be reeled back in because they run out of energy or need others up with them to keep them going but this horse had the run of the race and only briefly looked like she might be caught by Smiling Eliza who was 2nd from along way out also.

It was yet another encouraging run from Eliza who has taken to hurdling very easily. She has been entered in another 3 year old hurdle at my local course Down Royal this week. Could this be the day I witness a club winner and get in the winners enclosure?
