Bettatogether and Dawerann at Tramore

A very sad night for the club as Bettatogether suffered a fatal fall in a 2 mile chase that was probably going to be his and Dawerann's last run for the club before being sold at the Ascot Sales next week.

This was Bettatogethers first run since the winter when he hadn't had much luck in a few races over hurdles. Gordon had earmarked him for a run over fences as he looked a good jumper but I think he got injured and we hadn't seen him since. The report from Alex was that he had been schooling well over fences and was ready to race. Dawerann was in the same race following his excellent run at Ayr. He'd experience over fences from a while back and also had Davy Russell on board. Galway Plate winner Mark Enright had the ride on Bettatogether and he had him sitting out the back, seemingly well out of trouble, early on. Dawerann was flying along in mid-division but made a mistake at the fourth and was left at the back of the field with his club mate. Bettatogether was jumping soundly and near the end of the first circuit he was starting to make his way up through the field before he came crashing down at the 6th. Usually, a horse will get up quite quickly after a fall and maybe carry on running without a jockey but I didn't see him get up and I feared the worst. My fears were confirmed when on the next lap the race was diverted around the fence he fell at and the screens were up around him. Thankfully the jockey was up but it didn't look good for Bettatogether and I was just waiting for the confirmation that unfortunately arrived from Alex in the post race update. The good news was that Mark Enright was ok. Dawerann was hampered when Bettatogether fell but he already looked to be up against it having hit the fence earlier and he was pulled up. Not the best finale for Dawerann as a club horse if he is sold next week but the main thing is he's ok. He is a club favourite especially with those who have been members for a few years.

I had more of a relationship with Bettatogether. After I joined, he was the first horse I saw racing on tv in club colours. He was one of the first horses I saw live and he was the first club horse I patted at the stable tour. He was so friendly and alert that day. When we were told Dawerann and Bettatogether were in the same race but that it would probably be their last run for us, I hoped they would go out in a blaze of glory especially Dawerann who had run so well last week. I didn't think a place was out of the question for him on recent form and the Sporting Life thought similarly. I knew it would be a tough ask for Bettatogether after such a long time out but I hoped he could have a good final run, never imagining it would be his final ever run. Horse racing can be thrilling but it can also be brutal and this is a tough night especially for everyone who looked after him at Cullentra. His best form was for his previous trainer where he had a 2nd and a 3rd but he was a beautiful big horse as pictured, looking his very best with Davy Russell riding him to the start at Fairyhouse, on the home page of this blog.

And there he will remain.
