Dawerann and Fairy Flute at Bellewstown

The great weather continued for the Bellewstown Festival with Ireland officially in a drought. The ground must be rock hard at the minute and summer horse Dawerann was back out on the Thursday night for his first proper race of the season having had a run in a charity race a few months ago. He was slow out of the blocks  in this mile and 6 flat race but Declan McDonogh had him up in a good position by halfway. At that point, he looked like he had a chance but no sooner did I think that than he started to drop back and his race was over when two horses fell spectacularly in front of him on the final bend. His race was run before that but Declan just cantered him home, looking back to see if Jockeys and horses were ok from the fall. It's possible Dawerann just needed this race to get him going so I'll reserve judgment for a while yet. He's been entered in a 2 and a half mile hurdle race in Perth next which will be welcomed by the Scottish members of the club.

Fairy Flute had to compete with Brazil v Belgium in the World Cup on the Friday night. I was seriously contemplating going down to this but I'm glad I didn't. Another race over 1m and 4 (plus a few yards) and nowhere near the places again. This was her worst race for a while, possibly her worst this year but she was out again 8 days after her last run and it told as she was 15/16 never threatening. Hard to see what the sense is in keeping running her over this distance but she may just get lucky at some stage and come up against inferior horses. She Sean Davis on board who took 7lb off but he was hard at work on her from about half way. Very disappointing but I feel so much connection with this horse having seen her racing the most out of all our club horses. I think a win for Fairy Flute or Bettatogether would please me more than any other. Unfortunately, thats the romantic in me and it may just be that these horses aren't good enough.
