Smiling Eliza and Fairy Flute at Gowran Park

Fairy Flute was back in action for the first time in 2 months in a flat race over 1m 4f on the turf. The going was good to firm and they went off at quite a pace, a pace she struggled to live with. She has never disgraced herself in her races, she just doesn't have the turn of foot to get into the final conversation. It was the same here and jockey Gary Halpin couldn't get any more out of her and she finished 7th of 16. There was talk of Fairy Flute and Dawerann being sold at the Ascot Sales but this isn't happening now and not sure what the plan is.

Smiling Eliza is a new horse for the club. Her father is Rock of Gibraltar, subject of a disputed breeding rights case between John Magnier and Alex Ferguson back in 2003. She had her club debut at Gowran on the same night. She has been an Elliott trained horse for a while and was owned by Mrs Magnier before us. Not sure if she's leased to us or what. She looks a game little mare. Jack Wildman, who had his first ever race on Fairy Flute in January, had the ride on Smiling Eliza. Jack recently had his first win so his confidence was high. She got hampered about halfway round and dropped 5 or 6 places to near the back but she got herself back into contention but had too much to do and ended up 6th. She only finished about 6 lengths behind the winner and this has been a common theme in her races up to now, not in the places but not that far off. Both horses were fine the next day.

Colonel Maximus has been retired and is going to be looked after by someone from the club. Apparently he didn't enjoy racing and there was no point in making him continue. Just goes to show even the best trainers can only work with what they've got. He retires with one win unfortunately it wasn't for us but I wish him a long and healthy retirement.
