Fairy Flute at Dundalk

It was a surprisingly busy Wednesday night before Easter at Dundalk as Fairy Flute returned to action for the first time since her long trip over to Wolverhampton when she was withdrawn at the start on vets advice. That misfortune meant the last time she actually ran was here back in January. She looked more impressive in the parade ring this time round and after listening to Gordon give the same instructions to the same Jockey, Jack Wildman, on a similarly cold but dry night and with word on the app during the day that they were looking for an improvement, I was hoping it wouldn't be all deja vu so  had a very small each way bet on her at 14/1. One difference this time was that she was wearing cheek pieces for the first time.

The race got under way as I stood at the finish line where they would go past me twice over the 1m4f. Fairy Flute came out of stall 3 and was prominent early on going by what the track commentator was saying. When they came past me, Jack did what he was unable to do first time out back in January - get her mid division. He managed to keep her there the whole way down the back straight as they ran in pairs then when they came round the bend to the home straight Jack tried to produce her down an inviting gap on the rail but she didn't kick on and ended up 9th of 14.

I felt it was a better performance by the young jockey than it was by Fairy Flute. I think she ran a lot better the last time when she stayed on well. Maybe getting her to mid division took it out of her or maybe the all weather track isn't for her. If we ever see an end to this winter so the ground can dry out it will be interesting to see how she goes on turf.

Alex and Zoe told us GE was happy with her and thinks she'll win a race. She was fine afterwards and the next day. Hopefully we'll see her again soon. Colonel Maximus has an entry at Cork on Easter Monday and another mare Scealai Aonair could have her first run for the club on Wednesday 4th at Leopardstown. Still no wins or even places this year but maybe one of these 2 can get us off the mark.
