Colonel Maximus at Wexford

Colonel Maximus had his first run for the club on Saturday in a 2m handicap hurdle at Wexford on heavy ground. He was also carrying top weight so it was always going to be a big ask. I only saw a bit of the race on tv but was able to watch it all later on the Sporting Life website. He seemed to be travelling quite well but a bit like Bettatogether in his first race this year, as soon as the racing started from 2 or 3 out he was left behind and was only spared the ignominy of last place by a another horse falling at the second last. Keith Donoghue was onboard, fresh from riding Tiger Roll to victory at Cheltenham for Gordon. He reported afterwards that he was happy with him as it was his first run in a handicap and the ground was very testing so he expects him to come on a lot from it.

Alex reported the horse was fine the next day and was taking it easy.
