Fairy Flute at Wolverhampton

Fairy Flute was entered again at Dundalk a couple of weeks ago but was balloted out meaning she needed horses to withdraw from the race for her to be in and that didn't happen. It was quiet for a few days then we got word that Bettatogether was entered in a 3 mile hurdle race at Ayr and Fairy Flute had been entered in a flat race at Wolverhampton and a mares hurdle race at Fairyhouse. When the weights came out she was going to be bottom weight in flat race at Wolverhampton and initially the Sporting Life was showing top rider Jamie Spencer was riding her. This was very exciting because he is a winner of some of the biggest races in flat racing and was riding in the Melbourne Cup in November. So in her first race of the year we watched Jack Wildman having his first ever ride on her then a classics winner on her the next. Not sure what happened but when it came to declarations Joe Fanning was down as the jockey. If she had've gone to Fairyhouse she would have been one of the top weights and although I prefer jumps racing, I wanted to see how she would go over a longer trip of 1m 6f having finished strong the last day over 1m 4f. Bettatogether had too high a rating for the race at Ayr so that one wasn't happening.

Fairy Flute left Ireland on Monday and arrived safe and well the same day although she didn't look that impressed with the snow. All the reports were that she settled well so I was checking the odds and looking forward to the race at 5.25pm on Wednesday 7th Feb. There was a red hot favourite and FF was 6's out to 9's and was 8/1 at the start. She looked well on tv running up to the start but just as I was looking to see if her odds changed, her name disappeared from the list and the commentator announced she was a non runner. Unbelievable! Alex confirmed the vet thought she looked a bit lame and wouldn't let her race. Cat, who travelled over with her said she was fine in the paddock so must've knocked herself somewhere on the way down to the start. Really disappointing for everyone, probably Fairy Flute most of all. To go all that way and not race. The main thing is she's ok.

We had some bad news earlier in the day that another one of the club horses called Ring Ben sadly died after doing some work on the gallops. Not a good day for the club and particularly for all those who worked with Ring Ben. All his best form was on better ground than you get at this time of year so he was being prepared for the spring but never got to run for the racing club. RIP Ring Ben.
